They are doing work that should prove beneficial this winter and next spring.

“They are putting up a snow retention system,” said Renae Korslien, State Fair manager. “Last year snow came off the roof and hit the Pub. We want to make sure that won’t happen again.”

Snow and ice that tumbled off the roof last winter resulted in considerable damage to the roof of the Pub below. The Pub roof has since been fixed, but the source of the problem remained. The retention system is designed to allow snow and ice to fall from the grandstand roof, but in much smaller and less dangerous amounts than what damaged the Pub roof.

“We want to make sure we go across the whole rest of the roof, too, for safety purposes,” explained Korslien.

The retention system should insure that no further damage occurs due to snow and ice falling from the grandstand roof, hopefully eliminating any future repairs to the Pub roof or anything else below the slope of the grandstand roof.

“The Pub roof is fixed and we want it to stay like that,” said Korslien.

The 2011 North Dakota State Fair was canceled due to flood damage at the fairgrounds. The 2012 State Fair is scheduled for July 20-28.

The new Sno-Barricade snow guards for standing seam metal roofing systems utilize a unique bar design to create an efficient, snow-stopping profile...

The new Sno Barricade Clamp-On Snow Guard System for standing seam metal roofing systems utilize a unique bar design to create an efficient, snow-stopping profile. The holding power of Sno Barricade snow guards comes from an innovative universal clamp that does not require adhesives and does not penetrate the roofing material. Inside the universal clamp is a patent-pending button crimper. It grips tight, yet there is no penetration of the roofing material; original manufacturer integrity is maintained.

Sno Barricade snow guards are designed to fit all standard and most custom metal roofing profiles. Both major components of the Sno Barricade snow guards – the universal clamp and the barricade bar – are available in any standard or custom pre-finished color as well as a real copper finish.

Snow guards for a new parking lot control building had to meet several guidelines established by the Naval Training Station in Great Lakes, Illinois, where winter snow fall often exceeds several feet and snow guard protection is important.

The first parameter was color compatibility. The building was designed with an off-white standing seam metal roof and the snow guards had to be an exact match. Second was the strict need to maintain roofing integrity. The snow guards could not penetrate the metal roofing material. And last, the snow guards had to meet budgetary requirements.

The Sno Barricade snow guard system, manufactured by Sno Gem, Inc., was selected for the project. In addition to exactly matching the roofing color, the Sno Barricade’s patent-pending button crimper was able to tightly grip the standing seam, yet there was no penetration of the roofing material; original manufacturer integrity was maintained. Also, no adhesives were needed.

While it was not a requirement of the project, an added benefit of the Sno Barricade snow guard system was the elimination of “raw” edges or unfinished surfaces that disrupt the aesthetics of the roof line. On the building, the Sno Barricade’s appear as an engineered element of the roof.
